Game scripts

What is a game script?

Script files are the "instructions" that teach the control how to work with a particular game. When a game is run, ThrustMaster's software automatically partners the correct script file to your ThrustMaster controls, allowing the control to have a custom setup for each game.

ThrustMaster's DirectConnect allows you to customize the control to best fit your playing style, instead of learning to live with the built-in limitations of game software and most controls. Conventional 4-button joysticks -- even they have a Point-Of-View (POV) hat switch and a throttle -- don't give you a very large range of options in game play. You're stuck with the game actions assigned to the control by the manufacturer, and there aren't enough buttons and controls for all but the simplest action games. So games typically have additional keyboard-based commands. ThrustMaster makes controls that can type keyboard game commands for you, so that you can keep your eyes on the action.

Why is at least one script file needed for each game?

The keyboard commands used in one game typically differ from the commands used in another game (example: typing an m in one game probably will not produce the same action as typing m in another game).

What if I don't have a script file for a game?

If the game uses Microsoft's DirectInput for joystick input, the game itself determines what the control does. If you wish to assign game actions to particular buttons, you will need a script file (assuming the game doesn't allow you to re-configure how the control works in the game). You can get a script file by:

  • Checking with friends and other gamers.
  • Checking out electronic bulletin boards and on-line services.
  • Modifying an existing script file or create a new one from scratch.

How do I create or edit a script file?

The easiest way is to use the ThrustMapper software. This allows you to build game scripts, assign them to a game, and get into the action quickly. A simple text editor also can be used for editing script files.

A script file can be used for:

  • Assigning keyboard commands to joystick buttons.
  • Re-mapping joystick buttons to button positions seen by the game.
  • Having both joystick AND keyboard input from buttons.

Okay, what does this manual do for me?

It is a reference for what each element of a script file can do, so that you can build script files that the ThrustMaster DirectConnect software will understand.
